Abstract

Sport science is the phenomenon of society culture and component of sports system. It continuously seeks for innovations and consistent patterns that could create scientific basis for most relevant theoretical and practical problems related to the human health, physical abilities and pursuit for high level sport achievements and high quality training of sport specialists. Results of scientific research permit us to take a new look at the system of high performance athletes training and, considering different factors, allow optimizing of athletes training. Sport science is rather new but rapidly developing research area that has its own research object, methodology, criteria, theory and philosophy. Present destination of sport science is to find and reveal consistent patterns of sport as a comprehensive social and cultural phenomenon. For the same reason, International Charter of Physical Education and Sport regards development of sport science as one of the crucial objectives of sports development and popularization. Achievements of sport science of Lithuania are discussed in present article: what sports laboratories are working in Lithuania, what kind of research is carried out with the participation of the athletes of different level, what kind of projects are presented to the different international and Lithuanian foundations. Realisation of the programme “Pekinas-2008” (“Beijing 2008”) is being analysed. Author of the article also discusses connections of sport scientists of Lithuania with the scientific institutions of different countries of the world; explanation is given, why former Lithuanian Council of Sports Experts was reorganised into the Lithuanian Sports Science Council and what are the difficulties faced by Lithuanian sport science.
