Abstract
This article examines the history of the East Melbourne Cricket Ground, a venue that competed with the Melbourne Cricket Ground for major sporting events and was home to the East Melbourne Cricket Club and the Essendon and University football clubs. The authors describe the ambience of the ground and the nature of the support offered by followers of its home teams. Because it was the home ground of clubs that did not draw on the support of local communities, there was little public protest when the site was requisitioned and the venue dismantled by the Victorian Railways Department in the early 1920s.
