Abstract
The rising cost of health care for high-risk public safety workers, such as police officers, place a premium on reliable methods of maointaining physical fitness and health. Most officers in the South African Police Service (SAPS) were found to be only average relative to their general physical fitness, indicating that the predominantly sedentary nature of the officer’s job which leads to a rapid deterioration in physical fitness following completion of academic training. It is the purpose of this article to suggest an in-service physical conditioning program that will greatly benefit both the employer and the employee, resulting in better health, reduced injury potential and reduce early disability retirements.
