Abstract

Evaluation is an important part of our daily life. Most intentional human behaviour involves the establishment of some value or criterion. The morphological composition of the sport participant not only influences performance, but also the level of participation, and forms the basis for optimal performance. Sport-specific norms are therefore a necessity. Success in sportsmanship is determined not only by morphological characteristics, but also by physiological characteristics, ball-coordination, hand-eye-foot-co-ordination, biomechanics and the player’s psychology dispositions. The purpose of this study was to determine the physiological parameters that can play an important role in competitive rugby performance and to draw up performance scales, which can be used as normative data. Two hundred and eighty-five junior rugby players were recruited as subjects in accordance with parameters identified as being important in rugby. The following tests were chosen: percentage body fat, isokinetic muscle strength, flexibility, strength tests, trunk flexion, Sargeant jump, 50m dash, 10x22m shuttle run and bleep test. A performance scale for each test was drawn up by using the z-transformation. Consequently, it was possible to award a percentage to each test performance based on the performance scales.
