Abstract

To attempt to elucidate the relevance of philosophy for discussions of talent development, the author examines, in a little detail, one of its key concepts: expertise. The choice of this topic is inspired partly because it has not so far received a great deal of attention from philosophers of sport, and partly because it seems to go to the heart of the topic, namely: how do athletes actually develop their talents? The approach to this question is to critically examine the concepts underlying some of the main accounts for the development of sporting (or any) talent, focusing specifically on the development of expertise. The author's ambition is not to settle the matter in some way, but rather to illustrate the ways in which philosophers might discuss some of the questions of talent development.
