Abstract

During the past ten years health development as well as health education has become a major topic in all the EU-member states. The school is the only institution where everyone spends at least 10 years of his childhood and youth. Therefore it makes sense to challenge schools and teachers with health education as a prime task from the beginning of primary schooling. In Germany some schools have taken the lead in health education by developing concepts and best practice examples where school sport plays an important role. A widespread model project promoting the "good and healthy school" has just started in Bavaria, Berlin and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern being supported by the Bertelsmann Foundation, the school ministries of the participating countries and several other organisations working in the field of health and welfare. Form the point of view of one of the evaluating institutions of this project, the author will present some of the main goals and concepts of the "good and healthy school" by focussing the possible impact on school sport development.
