The topicality of the work is based on the need of coaches, who are working with athletes, to know how to communicate with male and female athletes in order the two gender groups would feel well and be successful in competitions. The research problem is the absence of an unambiguous response to the question on the similarities and differences of communication of male and female handball players and the level of their communication and listening skills. The object of research is the peculiarities of communication of handball players. The goal of the work is to disclose the peculiarities of communication of high-mastery handball players. To reach this goal the following tasks were set: 1) to compare the peculiarities of communication of male and female handball players; and 2) to compare listening skills of male and female handball players. The research hypothesis: peculiarities of communication of depend on the gender. The tested athletes were given a questionnaire to investigate their communication skills and listening skills. To investigate communication skills a questionnaire on communication skills was employed. The tested individuals received 51 questions. They responded ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to the questions by marking a relevant response. For each response that was identical to the key response 1 point was given. Communication skills were evaluated as follows: 38 and more points – good; 30-37 points – satisfactory; and 0-29 points – weak. To investigate listening skills the R. Martens questionnaire was applied. The tested individuals were given 14 statements to which they replied by marking one of four possible answers: ‘never’ – 1 point; ‘rarely’ – 2 points; ‘sometimes’ – 3 points; and ‘often’ – 4 points. Listening skills were evaluated as follows: 15-34 points – good; 35-44 points – satisfactory; and 45 and more points – weak. To process the results of the research on communication and listening skills the following methods and mathematical statistics were applied: Student’s criterion t, and criterion ÷2. In order to establish the peculiarities of communication of high-mastery handball players, in 2003 we investigated handball players to two male teams (LKKA-Atletas and Geleziniai Vilkai). And two female teams LKKA-Zalgiris and National Youth Team LOSC) playing in the highest league of Lithuania. During the research respondents of training classes were given questionnaires to investigate their communicational and listening skills. The respondents filled in the questionnaires independently, within 15 minutes. The specimen sample consisted of 22 male handball players and 22 female handball players. In total, 44 persons were tested. The average rate of communicational skills among female handball players was 32.88 ± 3.6 points, and the average rate among male handball players was 30.26 ± 4.1 points. Having applied the Studtent’s criterion t, it was established that the level of communicational skills of female handball players is higher than that of male players and the said differences are statistically reliable (t = 2.25; p < 0.05). The level of listening skills among high-mastery handball players was also statistically reliably different (t = 1.97; p < 0.05). The average rate of listening skills of female players was 33.07 ± 4.9 points, while the average rate of male players was 35.89 ± 4.6 points. The less number of points is collected by a tested person during the research, the higher evaluation is attributed to his/her listening skills. Accordingly, the listening skills of female players are better in comparison to that of male players. Having completed the research on the peculiarities of communication of high-mastery handball players we may assume that communication skills of female players are stronger and the level of listening skills is higher than those of male handball players.
