Abstract

Athletic training is an exciting field of study and a fast-growing profession. Increasingly, high schools are recognizing the advantages of having someone on staff who is highly trained and skilled to deliver health care to athletes. This has prompted many high school students to volunteer to work in the training rooms and learn from athletic trainers by assisting in injury care and prevention, administrative duties, and rehabilitation in closely supervised situations. As a result of their experience, some of these students seriously consider athletic training or another health care field as a profession. This textbook is for the student who needs further training for volunteering in a school's athletic training program or the student who is thinking of going into the area as his or her lifelong work. 'Athletic Training for Student Assistants' provides a broad overview of the areas that you can investigate as a volunteer and as a potential professional. In this book, the authors have addressed the concepts, injuries, and illnesses that they, as certified athletic trainers, have dealt with at the high school level. The book is divided into nine units: Unit I explains basic anatomy and how injured tissue heals. Unit II covers first aid, the athletic injury assessments that you will observe on a daily basis, and the emergency procedures that an athletic trainer performs. Units Ill, IV, and V cover the types of injuries that affect athletes. The sixth unit discusses injury prevention and focuses on taping and wrapping and protective equipment. Unit VII explains how to get an athlete back into action after an injury and discusses psychological considerations that apply to rehabilitation and athletic participation. Unit VIII covers many other aspects of athletic training such as drugs, nutrition, conditions and illnesses, and communicable diseases. Finally, unit IX gives an overview of athletic training by discussing preparation for professional and administrative aspects of athletic training. 'Athletic Training for Student Assistants' includes several features that will help the students throughout the course. The objectives for each chapter are stated, at the outset, to help the students understand the focus of learning. At the end of each chapter are four sections: Key Terms, Questions for Review, Activities for Reinforcement, and Above and Beyond. The key terms are bolded within the text where they are defined and are also listed at the conclusion of each chapter. The questions for review reflect major topics and objectives. Defining the key terms and answering the questions for review will help the student check how well he/she is learning and serve as a review for chapter tests. Aus der Einleitung
