Abstract des Autors

This five-part chapter attempts to evaluate the many parameters involved in HPV drive-train design. It begins with a discussion of the three rider positions, upright, supine, and prone, that may be used in HPV designs. Part 2 examines pedaling motions from a mechanical perspective and investigates various drive motions. Part 3 considers the function of the drive as it moves the vehicle and the role of variable gear ratios. Part 4 investigates oval chainwheels and similar mechanisms, which use circular pedal motion with nonconstant pedaling speed in an effort to improve efficiency. Part 5 brings the data together with some conclusions about the efficiency of converting human effort into vehicle motion. Verf.-Referat
