Abstract
As a study in social integration Daniel Mendozaïs early life provides a good illustration of how the force of personality and prodigious talent can apparently "break" many of the rules that govern others in society. In this sense Daniel Mendoza and other sporting heroes that have followed him may not be a good model to apply to others. Mendozaïs acceptance into the very highest strata of society in the 1780ïs and early 1790s would have been a major achievement for any young man from a humble background; the fact that he was a Jew makes it remarkable.
