Abstract des Autors

An optimal performance in the discus event involves a complex interaction of throwing movements and release parameters for the implement's flight across an area where the exact nature of the prevailing air flow is not known. For an athlete to achieve the best competition distance, on any given day in any particular conditions, the athlete needs to understand the aerodynamics of the implement, to be able to read the wind conditions and to then have the ability to release the discus with a set of release parameters that will culminate in a near optimum performance. While most novice throwers instinctively adapt technique and release parameters to improve the range, an elite athlete should already know where those extra metres can be found. This will be achieved more quickly if the athlete is prepared to become a serious student of the release, discus flight and his own performances. An active interest in the science of the event will inevitably take the thrower beyond his one throwing experiences and casual observations, and on towards the answers needed to optimise an individual specific, maximum competition distance.
