Abstract des Autors

Muscle pain and soreness can occur from several sources including disease, trauma, and unaccustomed exercise (20). Muscle pain related to exercise, however, can be divided into three distinct categories: 1. Pain or discomfort during or right after exercise, referred to as rapid onset muscle soreness; 2. Pain or discomfort usually 2 or 3 days after unaccustomed exercise, referred to as delayed onset muscle soreness; 3. Pain from rigorous, involuntary contractions (muscle cramps) that have a sudden onset and last for several seconds. This review focuses on muscle soreness that occurs 2 or 3 days following unaccustomed exercise. It provides insight into the current theories, assessment techniques, and findings related to the possible prevention of - or at least the attenuation of - the soreness associated with heavy unaccustomed exercise.
