Sumo is a relatively safe sport in comparison with rugby and American football, especially with regard to cervical spine injuries. In sumo, dislocations of the spine and spinal cord injuries are rare. We have seen, however, a case of atlantoaxial dislocation and spinal cord injury in a sumo wrestler. We report this case including details of how the injury occurred and its implication in relation to the rules provided by the Japan Sumo Association. Verf.-Referat
