Abstract des Autors

The rotational shot put is technically demanding even for high calibre throwers. The technique involves complex movements performed at a relatively high speed in a limited space. The purpose of this study was to identify those characteristics of the rotational technique used by two elite male shot putters, when throwing over 20 metres, which is close to their best performances for two consecutive seasons (1996 and 1997) at major shot put competitions in Finland. The findings suggest that the profiles of the elite shot putters did not differ significantly. The results support the earlier findings that a large change in the speed of the shot during the second double support phase is the most important determinant of the distance of the shot put. A critical phase may be the flight phase in the middle of the rotation when the speed is at its lowest. Verf.-Referat
