Abstract

The purpose of this study was to test the mechanical properties of popular playing cast materials and their abilities to absorb the force produced by an impact. A Shore A2 durometer was used to test the hardness of four types of materials: RTV11, Delta-LiteR, QuickCastTM, and ScotchcastTM Soft Cast. Force absorption characteristics of the materials were analyzed using a drop test. The rigidity (stiffness) of the materials was measured using modulus of elasticity procedures. ANOVA techniques were used to analyze the differences between group means for hardness, peak force, percentage of force absorbed, modulus of elasticity, and compressive stress. There were significant differences in the hardness of the materials. The QuickCastTM and the RTV11 were able to absorb a large percentage of the impact force and had the lowest compressive stress values. In the modulus of elasticity test, QuickCastTN proved to be the most rigid of the materials. The best values for the performance coefficient were obtained by QuickCastTM and RTV11. Verf.-Referat
