Abstract des Autors

In allergic-asthmatics, bronchial responsiveness - by definition connected with asthma - can vary: it increases with high allergenic change and it decreases with the end of exposure and/or during intercritical periods. The aim of this work was to study this variability in 13 asthmatic athletes all engaged in aerobic sports. All of them suffering from exercise-induced bronchospasm (EIB), during allergenic periods (pollens), but recording no symptoms during the intercritical period. A study was made adopting physical exercise as the provocative test in the two periods considered. Each athlete was made to run on a treadmill for 8 min at an increasing speed. The same method was used in both periods of the study, under similar climatic conditions. In basal conditions, the Forced Vital Capacity (FVC) and the Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 second (FEV1), turned out to be significantly lower during the critical period, with good reversibility after inhalation of 200 micro-g of Salbutamol. During the allergenic period the exercise test led to a great decrease of FEV1, and the process of recovery of the basal condition was very slow. During the intercritical periods, bronchial calibre turned out to be - with the provocative test - normal or slightly endangered and such as to be asymptomatic. In conclusion the athletes examined have shown a seasonal variability of the bronchial responsiveness, a fact which has to be taken into consideration in the pharmacoprophylaxis of EIB. Verf.-Referat
