Abstract des Autors
Objective: To review literature pertaining to concussion resulting from minor head injuries that occur in contact sports for assessment of these consussions and the criteria for return to play. Data Sources: A Medline literature search was performed. Only English language materials were reviewed. In addition, course materials from the New York Chiropractic College Diplomate program in sports injuries were reviewed and included. Study Selection: The studies detailed minor head injuries resulting from contact sports, classification of concussions, and repeat injuries. Also included was information detailing the guidelines for managing concussions and the criteria for returning the athlete to competition. Data Synthesis: Studies indicate that minor head injuries in contact sports often result in concussions. Both the Colorade Guidelines and the American Council of Sports Medicine Guidelines are the standards for classifying these concussions and providing the criteria for returning the athlete to play. Conclusion: Minor head injury resulting in concussion is a common occurrence in contact sports. The sideline physician must be well versed in evaluating this injury and managing the injured athlete during recovery; only the athlete's wellbeing should affect his decisions. Verf.-Referat
