Total protein and albumin were diminished in 18% and 36.7%, respectively. Elevated levels of triglycerides were found in 38.8%, while cholesterol was low in 59.2% of the patients. Sodium and potassium were diminished in 28.6% and 8.2%, respectively. In 49%, basal levels of cortisol were below 15 micro-g/dl (minimum under stress). Deficiency of testosterone was apparent in 24.5% of the patients. Evidently, lack of sodium and hypoglycemia as well as insufficient glucocorticoid levels are possible risks of strenuous physical exercise. Lack of protein and testosterone hinder muscle growth.
