Abstract des Autors
This is a running prospective study in 59 well-trained amateur marathon runners (13 women, 46 men; 41+/-1 years). The participants were healthy and without symptoms of coronary artery disease. Left ventricular hypertrophy without signs of cardiomyopathy was detected by echo-cardiography in 22 runners (37%). In 19 (32%) persons, ventricular extrasystoles (Lown class >/=3) were found by 24-h ECG, and in 10 persons (17%) we were able to detect elevated BP (diastolic BP at rest >/=95-110 mmHg) by BP measurement at rest and over 24 h, which was a significantly higher percentage compared to ergometric work load. The rate of arrhythmias (Lown class >/=3) was significantly higher in hypertensives. Thus our results demonstrate that marathon runners can be at risk of sudden cardiac death. This subset of patients can be identified already by a basic diagnostic procedure. Verf.-Referat
