An account is given of the results of an electromyographical study jointly undertaken by two institutes to determine the extent to which the vastus medialis and the vastus lateralis work together in extension of the knee during two dynamic and two isometric tests designed to illustrate the synergisms between the two muscles in relation to internal and external rotation of the feet, and to the knee extension angle respectively. The results lend support to the view that the vasti are inserted in the quadriceps as in a structure acting in an integrated fashion like a single complex. A difference between the interventions of the two vasti was also discerned. This, however, would seem attributable a personal "characteristic dominance" trait peculiar to a given person, and not to the kinesiological situation in which the lower limb is required to act.
