Abstract des Autors

Owing to a general increase in sports activities, the percentage of spinal injuries sustained during sports has increased dramatically, in the past decade, up to 15% of all spinal injuries, corresponding to 45 patients in our collective (n=305). 28 (62%) of them underwent spinal surgery. An analysis of the specific mechanisms of injury revealed that 30% of all spinal lesions were due to skiing accidents followed by mountain climbing and paragliding, each responsible for about 20% of all lesions. The precise, two-dimensional radiological examination of the complete spinal column is of essential importance for an adequate descision on the patient's treatment. If either the radiological diagnosis reveals an unstable fracture of the spine or the patient develops a neurological deficit, he or she should be immediately transferred to a specialized spinal trauma center. Only such centers can provide further invasive/noninvasive diagnostic procedures as well as the interdisciplinary treatment and subsequent physiotherapy necessary in the postoperative phase. The major goal of treatment of unstable spinal injuries is the early mobilization and rehabilitation of such patients in order to guarantee their rapid reentry into the normal way of life.
