Abstract des Autors

The authors refer about a national survey on unfitness due to otorhinolaryngological diseases. The survey was realized through questionaries fullfilled by 20 main Italian Sports Medicine Regional Centers. Sport activities were classified in 7 groups according to ENT pathology risk of impact: acquatic sports, barotraumatic sports, figthing and team sports, dexterity sports, winter sports, noisy sports, vehicular or kinetic sports. The results of the survey reveal that the judgement of unfitness is correct for most pathologies, while it seems too much conservative in respect to aural inflammatory diseases and to subjects with good or excellent results of ear microsurgical procedures. On the contrary it appears that subjects with hearing impairment are too easily admitted to agonistic activities that imply to recognize acoustic alarm signals or that are known to provoke noise-induced hearing loss. It seems also that the diagnostic procedure enforced by the actual law on physical fitness for agonistic sport activities has become too old in respect to the diagnostic tools that have been developed in the past 10 years in the otorhinolaryngological and audiological fields like: Impedance Audiometry, Auditory Brainstem Responses, Evoked Otoacoustic Emissions, Rhinoreomanometry, Fiberoptic Endoscopy. Authors suggest that it must be adopted a more updated diagnostic battery for evaluating physical fitness and present their proposal on the topic. Verf.-Referat
