N2 - This study describes the caloric balance of 10 advanced female college dancers at a liberal arts college. Each dancer wore a Caltrac accelerometer for 3 days, and measurements of caloric expenditure were recorded every 24 hrs for the 3-day period. Subjects also recorded dietary intake each day (written dietary recall and interview) for the 3-day period. A computer diet analysis program was used to determine caloric intake and nutritional analysis from the dietary recall. The results showed that the dancers consumed an average of 1,746.8 Kcal/day and expended an average of 2,177.9 Kcal/day. The difference of 430.2 Kcal/day was statistically significant (p=.011). Analysis also showed that the dancers obtained 54.7% of their calories from carbohydrate, 30.2% from fat, and 14.9% from protein. Based on these results, it appears that advanced dancers at the college level restrict their caloric intake, expend calories comparable to normative data, and consume nearly the suggested percentage of calories from carbohydrate, protein, and fat.
