Abstract

The article begins with a brief assessment of the value of nostalgia. The author then assesses in some detail the reasons which make baseball especially suitable as a nostalgic sport, eg. the fundamental rules have remained the same, and it has numerous legends. He describes the most typical characteristics of baseball legends and why these traits remain so memorable. In the remainder of the article the author explores three incidences in baseball history, one between White Sox owner Eddie Cicotte and Charles A. Comiskey, another between Carl Hubbell and Dick Kinsella and the third between Boom-Boom Beck and Hack Wilson. He assesses the time frame of each and he analyses each case in terms of the circumstances that gave rise to each. He contrasts the actual facts with the legendary facts and suggests what makes them each a part of baseball memory. He finishes off by comparing each of them with one of the worlds most famous baseball legends. Babe Ruth's home run in the 1932 World Series. He concludes by suggesting various qualities which attract the mind to such legends, such as the mind's propensity to link the past and present and the attraction of romantic truth. Eaton
