Abstract des Autors

18 persons were randomly assigned to a placebo or a Mg-group and received 15 mmol/day Mg-aspartate hydrochloride or placebo for 4 weeks. Before and after the supplementation the athletes had to carry out an exhaustive and specific ergometer test. During the supplementation period, Mg in red blood cells increased significantly by 8% from 1.74 +/- 0.28 mmol/l in the Mg group. Running time in the Mg group increased by 11.3% from 11.89 +/- 1.86, lactate concentration increased by 6.6% from 9.28 +/- 2.22 mmol/l. At the same time maximal O2 intake increased in the Mg group from 3352 to 3630 ml with a parallel change in work load. These data suggest an improvement of oxygen utilization during the supplementation period, possibly related to Mg dependent activation of specific enzymes located in glycolysis and respiratory chain.
