abstract	The influence of bicarbonate (0.3 g/kg body weight taken orally 2 hours before testing) on the anaerobic performance (running on a treadmill until exhaustion, speed 22 km/h, slope 5% was tested in 10 middle distance runners of national level (1,500 m best times 3:51.5 min +/- 6.5 s). Bicarbonate intake resulted in higher blood - pH values at rest and after exdercise, but the absolute difference between pre- and postexercise values was unchanged despite an increase in maximumlactic acid concentration from 12.4 +/- 2.3 to 15.9 +/- 2.0 mmol/ l (p < 0.005). Buffer capacity (Lac/pH) increased from 41.7 +/- 6.1 to 54.2 +/- 3.5 (p < 0.001), running time until exhaustion from 102 +/- 29 to 123.5 +/- 38 s(p < 0.001). The results confirm the fact, that the buffer capacity against fixed acids plays an important role in the anaerobic performance of athletes. Verf.-Referat
