N2 - A new way to determine the workload intensity of maximum lactate-steady state (maxlass) - when lactic formation and elimination are equal during long lasting exercise - was tested in 17 male swimmers of national level. After initializing a lactate-acidosis by a short exhaustive work (2 x 50 m sprint with maximum intensity and 10 sec rest between the bouts) an "ergometry in water" was performed, where the work load is stepwise increased beginning from low intensities. As lactate elimination dominates on the first steps, the lactate-workload-graph first decreases, reaching a nadir, where lactate formation and elimination are the same and then increases. Continuous exercise (3,600 m swimming) with the intensity at the lactate turnpoint revealed nearly constant lactate concentrations in each athlete despite considerable inter-individual differences.
