12 sedentaries, 13 wrestlers, and 12 endurance-trained long-distance runners volunteered for a passive tilt table test. 50% of the runners showed orthostatic symptoms in contrast to only 25% of the wrestlers or sedentaries. The reduced orthostatic tolerance of the runners may not be generally accounted to a decreased sympathetic activity since neither plasma norepinephrine nor epinephrine was lowered at rest or after postural change. The plasma renin activity, however, was significantly reduced in runners at rest and was only slightly stimulated after postural change. Among other things, this could be mediated by a training-induced lower number of renal beta-adrenoceptors which facilitates renin release. This adaptation might be reflected by the runners lowered number of beta-adrenoceptors on intact mononuclear leukocytes. Verf.-Referat
