Abstract des Autors

The primary focus of the present review is to examine the cellular basis for the diversity in mechanical function between skeletal muscle fibers. This review will concentrate on the most recent evidence linking the myofibrillar composition of the fiber to the contractile characteristics, and most particularly to those characteristics relating to dynamic behavior. Although each process is critically dependent on energy availability mediated by ATP hydrolysis, this aspect will not be emphasized. Rather, the provision for energy has been left to other reviews appearing in this issue. Verf.-Referat
