abstract How did that feel? How successful was the individual at relaxing? It is important to remind the athlete not to try too hard. If one does, this could cause some difficulty. Be passive and just let it happen with regular practice. Soon the individual may become aware of places in the body which tend to hold tension. A worthwhile goal is to spot this tension and release it before it causes any pain, such as headaches and backaches, or performance problems. Relaxation is necessary for concentration and imagery practice because it reduces and eliminates other thoughts and simulation that interfere with the single-minded focus necessary for imagery practice.
