Abstract
It is estimated that in the Netherlands 60.000 individuals suffer to some extent from liver disease. They are often excluded from physical activity, because it is assumed that rest, in particular bed rest, is essential. This assumption, however, is based on tradition rather than the results of the available studies. In this paper, the literature on the (in)advisability of physical activity in case of liver disease is critically reviewed. Most often the data show no negative effect.
