Abstract

Much has been written about cervical and lumbar spinal injuries in sports. These segments of the spine are more mobile and therefore at increased risk for injury. The thoracic spine is strengthened by the adjacent ribs. The configuration of the thoracic cage stabilizes the spine in flexion, extension, and lateral bending, thus reducing the frequency of injury. There is a paucity of information on sports-related isolated fractures of the thoracic spine. The following case study illustrates the mechanism of injury, difficulty in early diagnosis, and postinjury course of care for a stable thoracic spine compression fracture in a football player.
