Abstract

The purpose of the study was to evaluate kinematic and temporal parameters associated with an increase in the load carried in an external frame backpack. Eight experienced backpackers wearing boots (n = 5) or shoes (n = 3) performed 10 walking trials over a force platform (FP: 500 HZ) while simultaneously instrumented with a foot pressure sensor system (EDG: 100 Hz) for each of three weightload conditions (9,25, 40 bodyweight). Single subject and multivariate statistical analysis techniques (p<.05) were incorporated to investigate weightload and footwear effects. Results identified six FP and EDG variables that in combination uniquely described performance differences in weightload walking. Additional results indicated greater double support times as load increased which was more pronounced in boots versus shoes. Double support and overall support times were found to contribute most to observed footwear differences. Overall performance variability was greater in boots that shoes across all weightloads.
