Abstract

Various researchers have already demonstrated the health-related benefits of an active physical lifestyle. Research in the field of physical activity participation often revealed contradictory results due to intrinsic inaccuracy. Not only should the quantity of participation be reported but also the quality. The latter should be based on the training principles such as intensity, duration, frequency and type of exercise. The CORIS-study, which was directed to a rural population in the South-Western Cape, was the first community study in this country analyzing various life style components - one of them being the physical activity patterns of white South Africans. The VIGHOR-study was directed to an urban society in Transvaal between 10-64 years of age. From the results it appeared that only 14 of the males and 7 of the females over 35 years of age participated in leisure time activities to the extent that an improvement in physical fitness could be expected. In both sexes the most prominent decrease in physical activity participation occurred in the age group 19-24 years. The most important incentives for participation in physical activities were health and fitness. Amongst the males, lack of interest seems to be the most important reason for not participating, while the females reported lack of interest, too lazy and ill-health as the most important reasons for their inactivity.
