Abstract

In the last decade much research has attempted to define the role of endogenous opioid peptides, such as beta-edorphin, which have been shown to increase during exercise. Early investigations focused on the analgesic actions of these peptides in relation to the runners high. Although the mood-related effects of endorphins have not been supported unequivocally, investigations using large doses of naloxone suggest that this hypothesis is still tenable. The identification of both central and peripheral pools of endorphins shifted investigations to their endocrine role, showing that they influence other pituitary hormones, lipolytic activity and ventilation. Endorphins have also been implicated in exercise-related amenorrhea due to their suppression of gonadotropin pulsatility. Verf.-Referat
