Abstract

This article examines how competitive athletes cope with sport-related stress. Female and male athletes (N=237) answered a 68 item modification of Lazaruss and Falkmans Ways of Coping Checklist based on a recent stressful athletic situation. The results indicated that athletes used a variety of cognitive and behavioral coping strategies. Factor analysis found that these strategies could be classified into eight separate dimensions: active-coping, problem-focused, seeking social support, positive reappraisal, self-control, wishful thinking, detachment, and self-blame. The findings are disucced in terms of the role of coping and measurement issues. Verf.-Referat
