Abstract
While clinical investigation of segment and joint motion on the examination table is usually confined to purely planar movement about and along major co-ordinate axes, funcitonal movement analysis requires unambiguous definitions of compound, 3-D segment and joint movement. These are not available in current handbooks. The present paper describes some properties of various angular parameterizations currently in use, and it proposes the so-called helical angles as a suitable candidate, since it avoids the disadvantages of other angular parameterizations.
