Abstract

The purpose of the study was to compare plasma lipid concentration with performance in endurance running in non-athletic individuals. The subjects were 31 women and 32 men aged 19 years. Analysis, however, concerned only those with the best (Group A) and the worst (Group B) results in the individual runs. The investigations included 800 m run (women), 1500 m run (men), 12 min run and cross-country run of approx, 6 km (men and women). Total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol concentrations, and apo-B were determined. No significant differences were found between the A and B groups as regards lipid concentration in men and women. This may suggest similar lipid metabolism in the groups, determined, among others, also by the same age and a similar level of physical activity. The studies have shown the lipid concentration responses in the subjects were similiar, despite different level of inherited aerobic capacity, as reflected by perfomance in endurance running. The observation supports the results by other authors who have demonstrated that sports training is the principal factor affecting alteration of plasma lipid responses, and hence probably their metabolism.
