Abstract

During 1989-90, a follow-up study was conducted of former University of South Carolina football players (n = 214) (1967-1972). The lpurpose of the study was to answer such questions as educational achievement, employment and marital/family history, medical/health histories, a retrospective assessment of satisfaction with the athletics participation experience, and general feelings of personal accomplishments and personal satisfaction. Completed questionnaires were returned by 75 men. Analysis of data revealed: 1) For the entire group (214) SAT scores averaged 923, 64 received degrees in 19 different degree programs, 2) 92 are married and 88 percent have children, 3) 96 consider their health to be good and only 10 are bothered by old injuries, 4) At present smoking and drinking seem to be moderate, 5) Job success was positively influenced by sports participation, 6) The majority were satisfied with the student-athlete experience. The results of this study reinforce the idea that when any group of students, athletes or non-athletes are academically qualified to be in college the great majority will be successful. Verf.-Referat
