Abstract

In professional sports, the considerable rise in performance in recent years has led to the limits of stress resistance being more closely approached. The greater number of competitions and diminished periods of recovery has further developed the potential for sports-related injuries. These injuries are commonest in contact team sports, such as football (soccer), and 80 consist of soft tissue lesions. The lower limbs are the area of the body most frequently injured, followed by the upper limb, the head and trunk, in that order. For a diagnosis in this field clinical examination is complemented by the following; radiology, ultrasonography, computed tomography and more recently by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We report our experience with the latter technique in the evaluation of soft tissue injuries in the professional sportsman. It has provided precise diagnoses, enabling correct treatment, avoidance of invasive procedures and minimal disruption of sporting activity. Verf.-Referat
