Abstract

The paper deals with the question of who determined the best jouster. Was this done by the ladies, as tradition has it, or was it the function of the heralds who applied a cleverly devised system of scorning in England? On the occasion of the spectacular tournament staged at Westminster from 18 to 25 November, 1501, the heralds scorning method was discussed by analysing the extant check-lists for four jousts. It is of great advantage that these check-lists have survived. They were shown for the first time ever on an overhead projector in Gubbio. The tournaments on 5 November, 1588, 28 April, 1560, 7/8 may, 1571, and the Accession Day Tournaments on 17 November, 1588, 1589, 1590, and on 17/19 November, 1594 give us an excellent opportunity of discovering how the heralds method of scoring changed in the course of time. Finally, it becomes evident that the heralds determined the winner and that the ladies were allowed to hand over the prizes. Verf.-Referat
