Abstract
No one can doubt that sport is often a means of or an occasion for celebration. The difficulty for observers is that we cannot always be quite sure about what it is that the celebration celebrates. Sport is inherently polysemous. It taken the form of a contest and lends itself to oppositions, but whether a specific sport event symbolizes community or hostility is a matter of interpretation. Four extended examples make this clear: the stickball game of the Indians of the American Southeast; the medieval game of folk-football; modern soccer; and the modern Olympic Games. In all of these examples we see that sport celebrates contradictory values. Verf.-Referat
