In der Sportpraxis werden materielle und verbale Bekraeftigungen systematisch eingesetzt. Zahlreiche Studien haben gezeigt, dass unter bestimmten Bedingungen Belohnungen und verbale Bestaetigung auch die intrinsische Motivation verstaerken. Zur Erklaerung des Einflusses von Bekraeftigungen auf die intrinsische Motivation wird die Theorie der Kognitiven Evaluation herangezogen. Diese geht davon aus, dass jedes Ereignis, das einen Bezug zur Selbsteinschaetzung oder der Selbstbestimmung des Sportlers hat, sich auf die intrinsische Motivation auswirkt. Jedes solche Ereignis, so z.B. auch eine von aussen kommende Bekraeftigung, kann zwei verschiedene fuer die intrinsische Motivation wichtige Aspekte ansprechen. Dies ist zum ersten die Frage nach der eigenen Spielkompetenz und zweitens nach der eigenen freien Entscheidung fuer eine bestimmte Aktivitaet. Anhand einer Versuchssituation mit Handballspielern wird untersucht, inwieweit sich Belohnungen bestaetigend auf den Willen zu spielen und verbale Bekraeftigungen positiv fuer das Beduerfnis nach Information ueber die eigene Spielfaehigkeit auswirken.
