Abstract
This review paper has two main objectives. First, it will introduce the reader to the general principles of epidemiology and indicate how epidemiologic designs can be applied to various areas of sports and exercise science research. The methodologic strengths and weaknesses of different research designs will be discussed. Second, it will present a systematic review of the current research literature in sports and exercise science, in which research papers are classified according to the design they have employed. This empirical evaluation of the literature will indicate the current trends in the choice of research design and suggest relatively deficient areas where further work may be needed. Verf.-Referat
