Abstract

A split-image filming technique was employed to examine the time course of the batting action of test cricketer when facing bowling from a fast-medium bowler, or a bowling machine set to the same speed. Timed from the movement of ball release by bowler or machine, bat upswing was significantly later, and the front foot movement significantly earlier, when the bowling machine was used. The differences observed in batting strike timing were interpreted as adaptations made by the matsman to the differential availability of temporal and spatial information from two delivery methods.
