Abstract

Rapid growth of participation in intercollegiate athletic has been accompanied by an ever-increasing number of athletic injuries. Rate of injury could be substantially reduced by identification of psychological variables related to injury. Research on arousal and attention as related to sport led us to administer the Test of Attentional and Interpersonal Style (TAIS) to 335 college athletes from 17 different squads. Subsequent injury patterns were compared to three predictor variables using multiple regression analyses. While only one sport (womens softball) reached a statistically significant level of prediction, the correlation coefficients for several sports, as well as the amount of injury variance explained by attentional style, indicate the TAIS shows promise for predicting risk of athletic injury.
