N2 - Ancient Greek literature is rich in political history. There were many political institutions, some more durable and long lasting than others, That historians have studied in great detail. Similarly, much has been written about the pervasive role that athletics played in ancient Greek society. However, as governments change within a particular society, so do policies which ultimately impact upon its citizens and certain institutions. This paper will focus on the city-state of Athens. Since Athens was one of the leading city-states in ancient Greece, and perhaps the most studied from the standpoint of its politics, it will prove beneficial to investigate the political and athletic interaction in Athens during the sixth and fifth centuries B.C. How did the changing Athenian governments of timocracy, tyranny, and democracy and important politicians during these regimens interact with athletes and athletic festivals? Specifically, the laws and policies of the sixth century politicians, Solon and Pisistratus, will be examined in order to determine how interrelated these governments were with athletes and athletic festivals. The last section of the paper will briefly examine what effect democracy had on the established policies of Solon and Pisistratus. Verf.-Referat
