Abstract

Lifting strength is an important requirement of many athletic events and occupational trades. The lifting strength capabilities of females and males can differ markedly. Multiple regression techniques were employed to determine if gender differences in the measures of body morphology could account for these differences in lifting strength capability. Lean body mass, biacromial breadth and stature were the anthropometric variables which significantly accounted for the differences in lifting strength once other variables were controlled. The primary implication is that although female lifting strength may be improved by increases in lean body mass through training, a disparity may always remain between the sexes due to other variables.
