Abstract

Serum testoterone and salivary testosterone were tested on 155 Chinese athletes before the training in winter. It was discovered that the average level of 71 males serum testosterone was 833.18 +/- 417.71 ng/dl and the average level of 84 females serum testosterone was 69.19 +/- 35.74 ng/dl. The results showed that the athletes serum testosterone was significantly higher than that of the normal men (P<0.01). In addition, it was shown that the strength fitness was the best when the males serum testosterone was above 1000 ng/dl and the females serum testosterone was above 100 ng/dl and under this condition it was easier for training of the items of the strength sports toward higher levels. The correlation between the results of synchronous measurements between salivary and serum testosterone was quite satisfactory (r = 0.91) therefore the former test can be used as a new non-invasive assessment of the testosterone level in man.
