Abstract

Since 1975, the Japanese magazine, SKIER, and its technical staff have been endeavoring to measure the mechanical properties and shape of skis sold in the market. For over eleven years they measured 763 pairs of skis manufactured in various countries. In this paper the outline of the SKI TEST is introduced, and it shows how the typical mechanical properties of the ski have changed during these eleven years. From the results, the following two interesting facts can be postulated: (1) the torsional rigidities are not critical for skiing performance and (2) on the contrary, the flexural rigidities are so important that the flexural rigidities must be kept within tolerance.
